Yes. Before a District of Columbia notary commission is issued, applicants must file an assurance in the form of a $2,000 surety bond (or its functional equivalent) with the Mayor, administered through the Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications. Commissions run for a 5-year term. Applicants also take the oath of office and complete a training class.
